Most of the time I keep my game running while I do other things. If I let the game running instead of turning it off, everything would be fine the next day (no followers stolen, no lowering of happiness).
If you turn off the game for the night and come back the next day, the Astari will have stolen your followers and your happiness is down.

But if it is just a guessing thing, I hope they plan to make it some how kept track of while off and not just a random guess. I just squish them as they leave and that seems to make the Astari unhappy and allows me revenge for unfaithful followers. So the game doesn't actually keep track some how while your game is turned off, it just "guesses" when you turn it back on? I have turned off the game when my people were much happier and when I came back a day or two later, many people had left. The game simply chooses some values when it *calculates* what happened while it was off, which has nothing to do with what would happen if it were running the whole time.
